Pediatric Dental Glossary of Terms - Supernumerary Teeth

Supernumerary teeth, a condition also known as hyperdontia, are extra teeth that develop in addition to the normal 32. Supernumerary teeth most likely will cause crowding, leading to poor oral hygiene and a need for orthodontic treatment. Dentists will see the supernumerary development using x-rays. Extra teeth are extracted as early as possible to prevent shifting and crowding. The most common sites, for supernumerary teeth, are just behind the upper teeth, behind the teeth directly in front of your molars, or can be found in the back teeth/wisdom teeth area.
