Pediatric Dental Procedures

In Pediatric Dentistry, Dental procedures for infants, children, & young adults follow the same basic pattern as adult procedures except for the very important difference that each one is carried out with the particular needs of our young patients, their physical as well as psychological needs.

Our 5 dental office locations offer pediatric dental procedures that are designed to either prevent dental problems or correct existing ones. These services include:

Metal Free (Mercury Free) Fillings Vs White Resin Fillings

For a variety of good reasons, we avoid mercury based (Amalgam) fillings completely and focus on metal free fillings as a standard feature of our pediatric dentistry practice.

Thanks to advances in modern dental materials and techniques, our pediatric dentists have more materials to work with to create natural looking fillings that match the color of your child's teeth. There are several very strong resin compounds now available.

Besides not looking nearly as good as composite resins fillings, metal fillings conduct heat and cold more easily creating increased sensitivity. Mercury fillings require a larger extraction to secure them with the consequent weakening of the tooth. Metal fillings are also more brittle and can break or chip easier than resin based materials.

The Dental Board of California stated in 2001 that “Composite resins are the preferred alternative to Amalgam (metal) in many cases. They have a long history of biocompatibility and safety.” The board went on to say that because the resin compounds bond well to dental enamel and dentin, much less extraction of good dental material is required to create strong, durable fillings.

The advantages of metal free (or Mercury free) fillings, i.e.Composite Resin fillings are as follows:

  • White Resin fillings are more attractive by blending with natural tooth color.
  • Resin fillings are less likely to chip, crack, or work loose than Metal (Mercury)
  • Resin fillings are less susceptible to new decay because they bond with the natural tooth structure.
  • Resin fillings require less tooth structure to be extracted leaving more of the natural tooth structure and strength
  • Resin fillings do not conduct heat and cold as easily so that filled teeth are less sensitive.
  • Resin fillings allow fluoride to remain and protect teeth.
